Materials and Methods The general experimental procedures and methods were the same
as described in the preceding paper (41). Kinetic studies of glucose uptake and lactic acid
production were carried out in 50-ml. flasks with a fluid volume of 10 ml. at 30” in a Dubnoff
metabolic shaker. The flasks were fitted with rubber stoppers with glass tubing extending
into the flask as an inlet of air or Nz. Aliquots (0.5 or 1 ml.) were withdrawn at various time
intervals through an opening in the rubber stopper.
